Peer Education

Expert health educators led sessions on subjects such as: anatomy, birth control methods, healthy relationships, communication & consent, STI & HIV prevention, sexual orientation & gender identity, and access to services. In addition to sexual and reproductive health subjects, training in the soft skills necessary to deliver public health messages and participate in professional development, such as portfolio/resume building and career panels.  The weekly meetings bring peer educators together to continue the work together and strengthen their communal bonds. To ensure quality, peer educators are continually trained and surveyed throughout the program for feedback.

From the intense training sessions, peer educators gain confidence through facilitation and leadership. Their knowledge in the historical, ethical, and philosophical aspects of sexual & reproductive health allows them to act as subject-matter experts to their peers. Peer educators use critical thinking skills and enhanced communication skills to answer difficult questions, navigate differing opinions, and use the lessons learned at monthly sessions to present topics to youth and community members.
